This is a project to which I could not have said no. After Daniele Balboni’s director sent me the script, I was struck by the subject and by how the narrative elements were written. My answer is immediately positive, agreeing to write the music for this beautiful short film.
The musical soundtrack has been differentiated on 3 main aspects.
– The first of timbric contrast.
In the Main Title, we hear an acoustic guitar that accompanies the solo Cello theme. The Cello sound has been modified to not give a clear perception of the instrument. So the guitar identifies the state of quiet, a moment before the earthquake, while the Cello identifies the moment when things change. Besides highlighting the change that the earthquake will bring, it also influences the psychological aspect of people.
– The second aspect is the Western one.
The music accompanies the journey that the protagonist makes with his wife to the house in the country, of my parents.
At first the music rhythmically accompanies the journey, and then evolves with a more incisive rhythm towards an atmosphere of challenge, which will be captured with the sound of the Tubular Bell, when the eyes of the son and father cross, anticipating so the relationship between the two is tension.
– The third aspect is given by the more traditional use of the instruments with tonal harmonies, to underline both the melancholic post-earthquake moment and the final moment, in which the grandmother becomes the protagonist and the way to pacify the tension between the father and the son.
For a project of this kind I could not help accepting. Piano and Strings accompany this promotional video that unites people who every day are committed to supporting the most fragile in the long journey of life.
In this production I was involved by the composer Riccardo Nanni for the production of the soundtrack and I contributed with 4 original compositions that lent themselves well to different moments of the narration. Some epic symphonic music accompany situations of suspense and circumstance.
Below 3 of the compositions for symphonic orchestra used.
The music written for this very interesting Documentary Film was born after a confrontation with the director. The meeting was very positive and really a great exchange of ideas.
Given the theme of the film, with the theme of music, or “main title” entrusted to the sound of the Cello in the headlines, identifies the female appearance and what these women have lived or still live. While the chorus, in addition to recalling the aspect of the sacrament of the Order, identifies the moment of loss of these “forbidden men”.
The most interesting aspect that involved me from the beginning was the ability to write music very different music for situations that change very quickly during each episode. The musical theme song for the documentary has a very funny character that jokingly plays with the main characters: the animals!
This documentary has involved me emotionally from the beginning, both for the work that is done to help and save these animals, both for the same animals. This aspect and based on the director’s requests, I created a music that could emotionally accompany the sense of freedom and independence of which the two wolves and by their nature, they need to live.
The melancholic sense of the musical notes chosen by me underline the difficulties that the life of these animals must overcome in order to survive.
“The writing of this score has been very stimulating from the beginning.
It gave me the opportunity to exploit different techniques of musical writing, so that I could better adapt them to the dramaturgy of the film “.
Even in situations where minutes or seconds are very few, musical effectiveness is essential. In advertising, the requests are very well defined from the beginning, just because when you get to the music, you have already established all the aspects that advertising must have.
So the composer’s ductility is fundamental to reach the goal in a really quick and precise time.
The collaboration with the film production company Kamel Film of Bologna has continued with this beautiful project for RAI 5 TV. So some of my compositions have been used to comment on some readings, in most of the videos produced by the film production company Kamel Film.
As with any soundtrack, even in this case the comparison with the director on what kind of music to adopt, to better support the ideas you want to communicate, is essential.
Once established the character of the music, I proceeded writing both situations with Blues character and other symphonic situations, thus accompanying the various and rapid situations that the short proposes.
